99% First-Choice Acceptance Rate

We are very proud of our Seniors' 99% first-choice acceptance rate.  However, while it's easy to brag about statistics and college lists, the fact is, it is far more important to focus on goodness of fit and aim for success throughout the post-HGS experience.  (Rather than on, merely, "getting in.")  To do this, we approach post graduation success with a great deal of care.

By focusing on fit, we are able to help our students identify the type of college environment or learning setting where they can be most successful.  We encourage our students to take ownership over the process, and our exceptional faculty is there to support and guide them every step along the way.

Beyond the Rejection Rate

When Loren Pope wrote his book, "Colleges That Change Lives," he altered many viewpoints on the the phrase, "good school."  Rather than focusing solely on the rejection rates of universities and post high school programs, (as was the practice of most rankings previously) he examined each school holistically, gauging its effect on the students that enrolled.

While HGS has had a number of students decide to attend the more typically competitive universities and programs throughout the world, many have chosen to focus on specialized colleges, small liberal arts institutions, or studies abroad.  Each student is unique.  We aim not at a mere "list of acceptances," but at success well beyond graduation.  Asking, "where do you want to go to college," is not nearly as useful as asking, "where do you want to go after college?"

Our Post Graduation Success Process

We know our students well.  With an average graduating class of fourteen students, each and every individual gets the attention and guidance they need to find the right fit.  Beginning in the spring of their junior year, students will start thinking about the senior year experience.  They will work with advisors, mentors, faculty, and the Head of School on the subject of post-HGS life.

Throughout the senior year, students work with two faculty members on researching and culling the thousands of opportunities and choices available.  The application process can look different depending on the choices each student makes, but there is faculty mentorship and guidance throughout.  Because of the diverse backgrounds and expertise of the faculty and staff, we are uniquely suited to help each individual match themselves to an educational environment where they can find success.

During the second semester, every Senior works toward post-graduation success.  This involves a mixture of simulations, interactive lessons, and guest presentations taught by a variety of faculty with the help of local experts, HGS alumni, and past mentors.  Ranging from "How to Live with a Roommate," to "How to Form a Study Group," to "How to Make Bad Decisions Wisely," these efforts provide the insight that is otherwise sorely lacking in a standard curriculum.

When a student leaves HGS, it is our goal that they have chosen a program where they can find success, they are equipped with the academic, intellectual, and emotional tools they need to find that success, and they are excited, enthused, and engaged with the next step in their educational lives.
